Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort (Palmetto Dunes) is a 2,000 acre world-class golf, tennis, and beach paradise. Jim Self, Jr., like his friend Charles Fraser, was a visionary. Fraser and Self brainstormed Hilton Head's first golf course. Self's crew came down from Greenwood, SC to construct the course in Sea Pines for Mr. Fraser. The PGA Tour is held there each March. Self went on to oversee Palmetto Dune and its many championship holes of golf. Tiger Woods honed his skills on Palmetto Dunes's Arthur Hills Course during his college days.
Palmetto Dunes is located in the center of Hilton Head with over two miles of direct beachfront. In addition to the Arthur Hills Golf Course, Palmetto Dunes is home of the renowned Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course and The George Fazio Course. Palmetto Dunes is also known for its tennis instructional program; it is ranked number two in the USA. It boasts 23 clay courts and two Nova ProBounce courts.
If the beach, tennis, or golf isn't enough, then how about an 11 mile winding lagoon system? It is full of fresh and salt water fish. Brim, bluegill, largemouth bass, and sheephead thrive in the warm waters of this well planned lagoon system, and the locals have enjoyed this fishing Mecca for decades. The alligators are known to eat their share of the fish. Recreational kayaks and canoes are also a common sight in Palmetto Dunes.
Palmetto Dunes is one of only a handful of Hilton Head resorts which has fine dinning and hotel accommodations. The Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa has the deepest swimming pool on Hilton Head; no problem diving in or landing a canon ball. Back in 1989, Mike Tyson used the parking lot of the Marriott to film a commercial for HBO and practice for an upcoming bout. Hilton Head's very own, Ashley Ingram, was Mike's personal limo driver and tour guide for the week. Ashley ran out of gas in the limo while taking Mike to Savannah and Mike helped push the limo to the gas station, loaned Ashley $20, and stood body guard while Ashley pumped the gas at the foot of the Tallmage Bridge.
Homes in Palmetto Dunes range quite a bit in size and price. The architectural style does not differ very much from one home to another. Prices however do range quite a bit. Most of the home designs are Hilton Head style with wood and stucco finishes. There are a few Mediterranean style homes near the beach. Ashley's Broker In Charge, Murphy Lemmon, has lived in Palmetto Dunes for 18 years. Prices range from about $300,000 up to $7,500,000.
